Chromosome segregation is an extremely complex process that occurs on a microtubule-based scaffold called the mitotic spindle (Gadde and Heald, 2004). Microtubules, produced from the spindle poles, capture duplicated chromosomes such that each member of a pair of sister chromatids is attached to opposite poles, i.e. amphitelic attachment. Chromosome segregation is the process in eukaryotes by which two sister chromatids formed as a consequence of DNA replication, or paired homologous chromosomes, separate from each other and migrate to opposite poles of the nucleus. This segregation process occurs during both mitosis and meiosis. Chromosome segregation also occurs in prokaryotes.
